Selim Çağatay is a full-time Professor at Department of Economics, Akdeniz University. With over 25 years of experience in economic research and policy analysis, Prof. Çağatay has made significant contributions to agricultural economics, rural development, and economic policy modeling. His research focuses on sustainable development, circular economy, geographical indications, and poverty analysis.
Prof. Çağatay received his Ph.D. in Economics from Lincoln University, New Zealand in 2002, with a dissertation on "A Comparative Analysis of the 1984 Economic Reforms in New Zealand". He also holds M.Sc. (1994) and B.Sc. (1992) degrees in Economics from Middle East Technical University. Currently he also serves as Vice Chairman of the Local Products and Geographical Indications Research Network in Türkiye (YÜciTA) and Editor of YÜciDER-Gİ Journal.
His research interests include economic policy and applied policy modeling/analysis, agricultural economics, rural and urban poverty, social policy, sustainable development, circular economy, and geographical indications. He is particularly committed to UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on areas such as poverty reduction, reducing inequalities, affordable and clean energy, and responsible consumption and production.
Prof. Çağatay has worked in numerous research projects funded by Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBİTAK) and various international institutions/organizations at different capacities from coordinator to senior expert. He has extensive experience working with organizations such as FAO, World Bank, OECD, EBRD, UNDP, and the European Union on agricultural policy and development projects. His recent work includes research and impact analyses regarding migration, circular economy principles, renewable energy, short- to long-term effects of major earthquakes and COVID-19 pandemic.
